IBC totes have become one of the most versatile tools on modern farms. Their large capacity, small footprint, forklift-compatible design, and built-in valve make them ideal for dozens of agricultural applications. At Grand Rapids IBC, we supply hundreds of containers to farms and agricultural operations across Michigan every year. Here are the ten most popular uses we see.

1. Liquid Fertilizer Storage and Transport

IBC totes are the most popular containers for liquid fertilizer (28-0-0, 32-0-0, and other UAN solutions) on farms. A single 275-gallon tote holds enough liquid fertilizer for several acres, and the bottom-discharge valve makes connecting to a sprayer or nurse tank simple. Multiple totes can be linked together for larger volume needs.

2. Crop Spraying and Chemical Mixing

Farmers use IBCs as mixing tanks for herbicides, fungicides, and insecticides. The wide fill opening allows easy chemical addition, and the valve enables controlled dispensing into sprayer equipment. Always use containers rated for the specific chemicals being mixed and maintain separate totes for different chemical families to avoid cross-contamination.

3. Livestock Water Systems

IBCs make excellent water storage and distribution containers for livestock. A single tote holds enough water for a small herd for several days. By elevating the tote on a platform, gravity provides enough pressure to feed automatic waterers. Use only food-grade containers for livestock water applications.

4. Rainwater Collection for Irrigation

Many farms use IBC totes to collect rainwater from barn and greenhouse roofs for use in irrigation. A series of connected totes can store thousands of gallons for use during dry periods. The cost per gallon of storage is dramatically lower than purpose-built rain cisterns.

5. Maple Sap Collection

In Michigan's maple syrup country, IBC totes are widely used for collecting and transporting sap from the sugar bush to the evaporator. Food-grade IBCs are essential for this application. Their mobility and capacity make them far more practical than fixed collection tanks for operations with scattered tap lines.

6. Fuel Storage

While IBCs are not the primary choice for gasoline or diesel storage (which requires specific DOT-approved containers), they are commonly used for storing biodiesel, vegetable oil-based fuels, and diesel exhaust fluid (DEF). Always verify chemical compatibility before using an IBC for fuel storage.

7. Cleaning Solution Storage

Dairy farms and food processing operations use IBCs to store CIP (clean-in-place) solutions, sanitizers, and detergents used for equipment cleaning. The containers keep chemicals organized and the valve enables controlled dispensing into cleaning systems.

8. Molasses and Feed Supplements

Liquid molasses and feed supplement storage is a natural application for IBC totes. The viscous nature of these products is well-suited to the large valve opening on standard IBCs. Food-grade containers are required for all feed-contact applications.

Additional Agricultural Uses

  • 9. Compost tea brewing — IBCs serve as excellent fermentation vessels for compost tea production
  • 10. Emergency water storage — farms keep filled IBCs on hand for fire suppression, equipment cooling, and drought backup
